Morgan Goes Pacific : The Southwest

We meant to camp after Texarkana but Big Spring Texas did not have a campsite as we thought it did, so we saw a sweet sunset instead and stayed in a motel in Midland (home of George and Barbara Bush... ha) with walls painted the exact color of nacho cheese and faux wood panels in the bathroom.

In the morning we went to a couple Salvation Armys and bought a ton of new old VHSs (including "AWESOME MINING!"), drove up to the Texas/Mexico border on a road that could not have been a public way (see comical GPS depiction), snapped a picture, and booked it into New Mexico.

Our plans to finally camp were thwarted again, this time by a lightning storm.  We pulled over to watch some lightning in the distance, everything became bathed in golden light, and then this RIDICULOUS (double) RAINBOW appeared before our eyes.  It was like a Thomas Kinkade painting, totally preposterous.  Border patrol rolled up to see what we were up to, and I told him we were just taking pictures of the rainbow, did he seem them?  I don't think he did, or he just had Mexico on the brain and didn't answer.

After that we stayed at Sand's Motel in Socorro, New Mexico, where there was a piece of paper in the bathroom labeled "BATH MAT" and two dollars in the microwave.  From there we drove into Arizona and CAMPED at Homolovi State park, which was amazing.  We made eggs in the morning and drove to the Grand Canyon, which was just okay.  Oops wait... it was ridiculous.  Like the rainbow, this massive, brain-boggling illusion that we didn't want to leave.  And I was amazed at the hoards of people clamoring towards the edge of it, unphased by the vast drop off inches past their Tivas.

Last night we stayed in Needles, California at the River Valley Motor Lodge, and now we are sitting on our friend Lauren's balcony in Hollywood eating chips and having "a beer".  These palm trees are pretty lush.  San Diego tomorrow!
