Turista Libre Tijuana Art Tour

I first saw this painting hanging on the wall at El Take It Easy as part of a solo Enrique Ciapara show. I was in a business meeting shoved in a booth and trying to be professional. I was so taken by the jaunty shapes and raw strokes of this piece that I found myself staring at it for the duration of drinks.  The colors are muted and seem municipal - grass greens, cement greys and backyard fence browns crowd around one long strip of bright blue making a dreamy mirage of a city.

Lucky for me (and you!), Ciapara will be opening his studio this Saturday as part of "Turista Libre Tijuana Art Tour" a mobile survey of four prominent Tijuana-based artists. Giancarlo Ruiz will show his short film "St. Jacques" which screened at 2010 Cannes Film Festival, Shinpei Takeda will discuss his multimedia work "Alpha Decay", and Jaime Ruiz Otis will share the details of his artistic process of recycling trash and transforming it into art.

The tour starts at noon where staff and participants will meet at the San Ysidro pedestrian border crossing in Tijuana’s Colonia Federal. The tour also includes admission to “Obra Negra,” a three-gallery exhibit at Centro Cultural de Tijuana's new expansion, El Cubo then lunch at Cielo Restaurant and Water Bar in Via Corporativo. Yum! Oh, did I mention the party ends at Ciapara's studio and that it's an old roller-skating rink in downtown TJ? And that there'll be drinks?

Do not miss this! Tickets to this rare experience are $20 and you can RSVP at turistalibre@gmail.com no later than Tuesday, March 22nd (that's tomorrow!). Or for more information, visit Turista Libre.
