Sezio's Picks : San Diego Music Awards

Although the line up is pretty much the same as any Citybeat-sponsored event, we have to give credit to the San Diego Music Awards this year for some of their nominations.  Here are our pics to win it all...

Best Rock Album is really a toss up between Irradio and The Donkeys (Although The Donkeys should definitely be in the Americana category).

Best Alternative Album should be Crocodiles.  I was late getting into this album, but was jamming I Wanna Kill all Labor Day weekend.

Obviously we're biased, but Best Americana Album has to be Dust Jacket.  Joel has been a standout in San Diego for far too long with little noteriety.

Shout out for Best Local Recording to Shark Attack and their great collaboration with Demasiado front man Jon Piotrowski (on the title track).

I'm giving the nod for Artist of the Year to Delta Spirit.  From Take Away Shows to major festivals, these guys have made the rounds this year.

As for the popular vote, it will be interesting to see how things shake down... I'm predicting a bar room brawl between John Meeks and Bill Cardinal for Best Country, and multiple trophies for those pesky Milgaten brothers who seem to have their hands into everything these days.

There's still a handful of tickets left, so pick up yours here.

MVM : Health

Tuesday edition - Welcome back from the gloriously long and summery holiday! I refuse to believe in this last weekend of summer crap especially living in San Diego, but I do feel for the kiddies who are making their stomach wrenching return to another year of school. I do not, however, feel for my teacher friends who get the whole summer off and are crying about how hard it is to wake up now that they are finally forced to work. Boohoo, welcome back to reality bitches!

Just kiddin, here is a radical new video from Health for "Die Slow"!

Subtext Turns 3, Swim Party to Perform

One of our favorite galleries in town is turning three years old this Friday, and to celebrate Subtext has a great show lined up.  Wanderlust will feature works by Demetrius May and Brody Albert and to cap the evening off local favs, Swim Party, will perform in the courtyard.  Should be a grand night, so cruise out to help Don, Dylan, Amy & George celebrate!

Here's a a bit of history and a big thank you from Subtext's blog:

Back in the summer of 2006 when we opened our small gallery & design bookstore in Little Italy, our goal was simple. We wanted to make a contribution to the San Diego art and design community by hosting exhibitions that featured up-and-coming (as well as established) artists. The community embraced us, and since 2006, we are proud to say that we have shown nearly 300 artists (and our current schedule is booked well into 2010). Our upcoming show, Wanderlust, opens September 4th and features new works by Demetrius May and Brody Albert (who happens to be the first employee we hired in 2006).

We could not have done this without the wonderful people we’ve met along the way. Everyone that comes to our events and supports our gallery makes it possible for us to keep the doors open, and continue to showcase these incredible artists from around the globe. Even in these trying economic times we have had a loyal following, and we are determined to show more amazing artists as long as the community will support us. So if you’re in  support of what we are doing, please come to our shows, have a beverage, and buy some art! Subtext loves you.

HM vs. Sezio : Ping Pong @ The Pearl

Dave Brown (Holiday Matinee) and Greg Strangman (The Pearl) have been running their mouths all summer about their respecitve ping pong game.  Over some delicious Trumer Pils (sponsor plug), we decided to settle this by hosting a single elimination tournament, open to the public to join in the competition.

Here's the rundown:

- Saturday, September 19th from 11-4pm (tournament starts at 1pm).
- Singles & Doubles brackets, both single elimination.
- $10 entry fee for each tourney, proceeds benefit Sezio (we're a non-profit).
- An assortment of rad prizes from local taste-makers.
- Wear your finest ping pong attire, preferrably all white.
- RSVP to pingpong@sezio.org to guarantee your spot.

If ping pong's not your game, just hang by the pool and look good... they'll be drink and food specials all afternoon, and it's supposed to be 80 degrees and sunny!  Free mimosas from 11-12, so get there early.

MVM : Damian Lazarus

I jammed through the sea mist on the way to work this morning to this little gem from Damian Lazarus. "Neverending" seemed like a totally happy and upbeat song until I saw this somewhat dark video. I'll just pretend it's still happy.

..a little reminiscent of Lykke Li's video?
