MVM : Unknown Mortal Orchestra

"Ffunny Ffrends" is an insanely catchy jam courtesy of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, the project Ruban Nielson started when he moved from New Zealand to Portland in 2010. Now a trio, the group has released their debut record on Fat Possum and will hit the road this fall. UMO plays The Casbah with Gauntlet Hair on Sunday, November 6th. Grab your tickets early.

Joining UMO at Casbah on November 6th will be Denver-based duo Gauntlet Hair. These two tracks have been on heavy rotation lately at the office, and we really can't wait to see them performed live. Grab Gauntlet Hair's self titled debut here, due out October 18th via Dead Oceans and don't miss this show!

Geography, Ghouls, and Girls

This weekend there are three opportunities to see art, make art and hear art with an opening, a photo safari and a live reading.

Friday night, the freshly opened Double Break gallery and store is premiering Horror Days, an exhibition featuring works by Rhode Island-based artist James Quigley, aka GUNSHO. The ongoing series Demonology is a collection of illustrated prints described as a “modern interpretation of demons classified in the occult text known as the Goetia”. Spooky. The opening is this Friday 6-10pm.

Saturday afternoon, the artists behind The Far East, a locally-based lit and visual arts journal are taking their first photo safari out to East County. Travelling by trolley, the group is meeting up cameras in hand with adventure in mind at the Arnele Stop on the Orange Line, 2pm. Most San Diego natives know East County by the lifted trucks, its unbearably hot summers and freakish charm. Yogurt Mill anyone?

If you can’t make it there’s still time to contribute, as the journal has extended the submission deadline for original poetry, non-fiction and visual art inspired by “the places, people and oddities that shape East County” til the end of the year. Submit online at sosayweallonline.com. For meet up info, contact Mindy Solis at mindydsolis@gmail.com.

On Saturday night head out to North Park for Masked/Unmasked at Green Scene Gallery @ Zagrodnik + Thomas Architects. Produced entirely by women, Masked/Unmasked is a visual art and live literature performance exploring the perception and self-presentation of women. The show features photography by Adriene Hughes and Rebecca Webb and performances by the female writers and performers of So Say We All. Doors open at 6pm, performance begins promptly at 8pm.

Double Break is located at 1821 Fifth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101

Green Scene Gallery is located at 3956 30th Street, San Diego, CA 92104

Film Screening : Echotone

As San Diego's music scene continues to grow, it is important that we take cues from more established music cities such us Portland, Seattle or Austin. Seattle recently launched their decade-long Seattle City of Music plan after discovering the staggering effect live music has on their local economy. In Austin, Texas, where live music is also a billion dollar business, there has been a condo invasion in the downtown venue district. The documentary Echotone takes an inside peek at Austin's growing pains through the eyes of a few up and coming bands and record labels.

Check out the trailer below, and cruise over to Habitat House at 8pm on Wednesday to screen the film.
