The Tree Ring Set To Record Debut Album

After one last practice tonight, The Tree Ring are heading up to Idyllwild.  Kelly Bennett, Douglas Welcome, Darla Hawn and Joel P West have been fine tuning a batch of 9 songs which will comprise their debut LP.  The Tree Ring will record in a set of two cabins over the next week plus, and then Joel will head over to Iceland to mix and master with the renowned 'Biggi' of Sigur Ros and Album Leaf fame.

After offering his last record (Dust Jacket) for free via art trade, Joel is calling on fans and friends to help fund this project by pre-ordering the record.  The Tree Ring is looking to raise about half of the total estimated costs, and they're putting together some pretty awesome prize packages for supporters.  Here's a message from Joel and the band:

$20 dollars gets you a limited edition screen print, the digital download and your choice of vinyl or a Tree Ring t-shirt.  $40 gets you both.  You can pledge your support on the Kickstarter page here, and while your waiting for the record to arrive, keep up with The Tree Ring here and preview a new track below:

MVM : Crocodiles

If I were to translate my love for Summer in a music video and then my utter horror that Autumn starts next Thursday in the last minute and thirty seconds of that same video, it might look a lot like Crocodiles' video for "Hearts of Love." ...I said might. Regardless of the hipster slaying and gnar gore, it's a good song and it's nice to see these San Diego residents showcasing some of the local scenery. (Can you spot OB's public restrooms?)

Crocodiles sophomore release, Sleep Forever, drops tomorrow on Fat Possum.  You can order a copy of the CD or Vinyl here, or pick up a copy at M Theory Records in San Diego.

MVM : The Naked and Famous

These New Zealanders just dropped their new album Passive Me, Aggressive You and I'm downloading it as I type. If the album is anything like their new single "Young Blood" I will be exploding it at Starlite this Wednesday. Here's the music video for "Young Blood" by The Naked and Famous

Plastic Fantastic Opens at Subtext Gallery

"Cute But Desperate" by Gary Allard

In this digital age, lo-fi livin’ is the life for me. Keep my beer cold and cheap, my books used, and my cameras disposable. Without the polish and sheen of Photoshop, film cameras leave the print in the hands of photographic destiny, where light leaks and graininess give an honest moment it’s due.

Half the fun of film is waiting to see what develops, so while I appreciate photography of all styles and forms, I have a very special nook in my heart for 35mm and medium format.

Enter Plastic Fantastic, a group photography show and benefit auction presented by American Photographic Artists San Diego (APASD) held at Subtext Gallery this Friday, September 3rd from 6-10pm. For one night only, photographers will show images created with plastic cameras. Think supersaturated prints in soft focus, think accidental vignetting, light flares, and double exposures.

Also, San Diego jazz band Pocket will play at 9pm and part of the proceeds from the evening will go to The AjA Project.
